General George Washington's
Headquarters in New Windsor, NY

This painting is of General George Washington's Headquarters at New Windsor. This was the residence of Col. Thomas Ellison in old New Windsor Village. The residence once stood on the top of the hill on River Road overlooking the river. General Washington came here in June 1779 and again in the fall of 1780 where he remained until the summer of 1781. From this Headquarters the capture of Stony Point in July of 1779 was planned. The campaign of 1781 which closed with the victory at Yorktown in October was also planned here. The house was torn down in the early 1800's.
